Ahead of the Eid-el Kabir and Yuletide celebrations, which are characterized by an increase in poultry consumption, officials of the National Avian Influenza Control programme in Yobe State have begun the fumigation of poultry markets, stores and cages with the aim of reducing the chances of spreading avian influenza virus and associated diseases. to commence soon." Kanem Trust reports that some 4000 domestic birds, including ostriches, geese, turkeys, ducks, chickens and pigeons belonging to about 40 farmers from Potiskum, Fika and Fune local government areas of Yobe State were killed between December 2006 and March this year [2007] following reported cases of bird flu in some houses and farms. Farmers whose domestic birds were killed by health officials following the outbreak of the influenza had also received financial compensation from the National Avian Influenza Control Programme.

Tests in Italy have confirmed the 1st poultry outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in the West African country of Benin, according to news services. Agriculture minister Robert Dovonou said that suspected cases found on 2 farms earlier this month [December 2007] were confirmed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (Office International des Epizooties; OIE) in Padua, Italy, according to a 15 Dec 2007 report by Agence France-Presse (AFP). The farms are north of Porto Novo, the capital, and in Cotonou, the commercial capital, both in Benin's southern coastal strip, AFP and Reuters reported. Benin is surrounded by countries that have faced poultry outbreaks within the last 2 years: Nigeria, Togo, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Nigeria has had one human H5N1 case. Ivory Coast and Ghana are other West African states that have had poultry outbreaks.

Over 1,052 birds have so far been culled in Panda Development Area of Nasarawa State in the wake of avian influenza (bird flu) that affected the area just as the people of the area were commended for reporting early signs of the flu.
