Russia- Anthrax in Horse Meat
3 August 2010
The Moscow Times [edited] [ProMed]
One man has died and 5 others have been hospitalized after contracting anthrax from a farm that supplied horse meat for pelmeni sold in Moscow and other regions. All 6 victims fell ill after being hired to cut the meat from diseased animals. It is thought that the horses started dying at the farm in June, 2010, but the farm owner hid the deaths. It is estimated that 2.5 tons of horse meat with anthrax were supplied to a prominent pelmeni producer. The meat has been confiscated, as were shipments of the company's pelmeni.
