Jamaica-Contaminated Vietnam rice dumped 04 Sep 2009 Jamaica Observer Twenty-five tonnes of rice that was shipped from Vietnam to Jamaica in June but was found to be contaminated with rat droppings, was on Tuesday destroyed by the Food Storage and Prevention of Infestation Division (FSPID) of the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce. The FSPID's senior food storage scientist said the rice, valued at approximately J$1.24 million, was intended for local distribution. She said it was pre-released into the custody of a customs broker, subsequent to which FSPID inspectors conducted an initial inspection of the cargo on June 26.
Jamaicasecuring food safety standards 03 Aug 2009 South Florida Caribbean News [edited][FSNet] Jamaica's newly appointed head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries' Agro-Investment Corporation was quoted as saying that a number of initiatives have been taken by Jamaica to ensure food safety standards, to facilitate global trade in Jamaican food. The official said that among these initiatives was the establishment of the Jamaica Import/Export Inspection Centre, which was opened in June to bring together, under one roof, seven regulatory agencies responsible for food safety. He said that the National Quality Policy for Jamaica speaks to the establishment of a single food safety agency, charged with the responsibility for satisfying human, animal and plant health, through the production of safe foods for both domestic and international trade.
