United Arab Emirates-Dubai: Introduces food safety rules

12 Oct. 2010
The National [edited] [BITES]
Of the 2.8 million tones of food imported to Dubai last year, 500,000 tones were rejected for not meeting food safety requirements. It is expected that by the end of this year food imports are expected to reach four million tones - most of which will be subject to new food industry regulations. For example, by December 2011, every food establishment will need to appoint at least one certified Person In Charge (PIC). This individual will act as liaison between the premises, municipality and Dubai Government. This individual should always be present and involved in the worksite and have direct authority, control or supervision over employees who engage in storage, preparation, display or service of food. The new regulations also incorporate other food safety rules and will be evaluated by a University for effectiveness.
