India- Socio-economic profile and food safety knowledge and practice of street food vendors

A survey was carried out in Guwahati city to determine the existing socio-economic status and food safety knowledge of street food vendors. Data on socio-economic and business profiles of 80 vendors were collected. A study was also conducted on the existing knowledge of vendors on food safety and hygiene practices and methods of procurement of raw materials. It was concluded that there is a high degree of association between procurement practices with the type of vendors, ownership status, and average income. The street food situation in the city was found to be quite dismal and requires rigorous steps to improve the safety of the food.

India-Isolation, identification and molecular characterization of Vibrio parahaemolyticus from fish samples in KOLKATA

Abstract: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a marine bacterium which is also responsible for acute diarrheal illness in humans. Eating raw shellfish or contaminated seafood is responsible for acute gastroenteritis. The aim of this study was to investigate the isolation, identification and molecular characterization of Vibrio parahaemolyticus from the fish samples in Kolkata, India. In the study, 90 fish samples were collected from 8 different market places in Kolkata, India. Fish samples collected were shrimp, prawn, bhetki, pamfret and hilsa.
The study concluded that a considerable percentage of Vibrio parahaemolyticus carrying the virulence genes and pandemic genotype among fish in Kolkata indicates that there is potential reservoir in Kolkata and consumption of sea fish or contaminated fish might cause Vibrio parahaemolyticus mediated diarrhea in this region.


Bangladesh- 45 million people suffer from food poisoning yearly

An estimated 45 million people in Bangladesh suffer from food poisoning or some kind of food borne diseases round the year, a seminar reportedly told the city on Monday.
The Health Ministry and FAO together organized the seminar on 'Food Safety Challenges in Bangladesh', where Prime Minister's Health Advisor Dr Syed Modasser Ali spoke as the chief guest.

The antibiotic resistance inSalmonellaisolates from 400 imported chicken carcasses in Bhutan and from 178 pig carcasses in Vietnam were analyzed on a random basis against 14 antimicrobial agents. Among the poultry samples tested, 13% were positive forSalmonella.SalmonellaEnteritidis dominated with a prevalence of 80.7%, and 40 of the 42 isolates harbored two or more resistance determinants. For the 178 pigs investigated, 49.4% of the swabs and 34.8% of the lymph nodes wereSalmonellapositive. The most prevalent serotypes in lymph nodes wereSalmonellaDerby (50.0%) andSalmonellaTyphimurium (27.4%). From theSalmonellaisolates from pigs, only 6% were sensitive to the antimicrobial agents tested. The high resistance level ofSalmonellaisolates from pigs and chicken carcasses to different classes of antimicrobials should be emphasized and encourage a prudent use of these agents in animal farming, especially in pig production.

India- Consumer link in cold chain: Indian scenario

The researchers attempt to study the awareness, behaviour and practices among Indian consumers, regarding maintenance of cold chain from retailer’s place to home and at homes within the framework of food safety. A sample of 524 consumers was taken in total. The study is conducted at 12 retail stores and through household visits in three state capitals in India. The study reveals that the consumers do not have adequate awareness about refrigeration practices or consider themselves responsible for maintaining cold chain and food safety. At a time when cold chain is a key issue for the food industry, these findings could assist government, non-government organizations, industry, academia and community in collectively developing effective public education programs, to alert and motivate the consumers against the possible hazards of ignorance of healthy practices for cold chain maintenance at homes.
