Indonesia- A farmer possibly dies of bird flu

A resident of Kabupaten Wonogiri is suspected to have died of bird flu [avian influenza (H5N1)]. The victim is a 55 year old resident of Dusun Pakelan RT4/RW2 Desa Jeporo, Kecamatan Jatipurno, Kabupaten Wonogiri.
Previously, 2 children from Kecamatan [sub-district] Eramoko and Kecamatan Manyaran of Wonogiri were reported to have died of bird flu.
According to the head of infectious disease eradication and environmental health, the victim started to develop fever, nausea, and vomiting on 30 May 2010. He was brought to a hospital in Kecamatan Slogohimo, and then transferred to a hospital in Wonogiri. On 9 Jun 2010, the patient was transferred again to the hospital in Solo, where he died.
The Head of Livestock, Fishery and Marine Services (Nakperla) of Wonogiri, Ir Ruli Pramono MM, stated that a team had been dispatched to the suspected location to undertake disinfection and investigation of any deaths of birds.

On Fri 4 Jun 2010, China's Ministry of Health reported a human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza [H5N1 virus infection] in Hubei Province. The victim was 22 years old, female, 4 months pregnant, and was an unemployed resident of Echeng District of Ezhou City in Hubei Province. She fell ill on 23 May 2010 and was hospitalized for treatment as her conditioned deteriorated. She died on Thu 3 Jun 2010 at 12:35 a.m. despite an intensive effort to save her.
Epidemiological investigation by local health agencies found that the patient had contact with sick and dead poultry prior to falling ill.
Work teams and specialist teams sent by China's Ministry of
Agriculture will launch investigations and laboratory tests on poultry, in conjunction with Hubei veterinary agencies.

The Ministry of Health in China has announced a new confirmed human case of [avian influenza] H5N1 [virus] infection. The patient is a 22-year-old pregnant female from Hubei Province.
Of the 39 cases confirmed to date in China, 26 have been fatal.

Indonesia-Avian flu infects two kills one

The government has confirmed 2 positive cases of avian influenza (H5N1) infection between February and April this year [2010], with one death.
The 1st case, who died, was a 4 year old girl from the Riau capital of Pekanbaru. She tested positive for H5N1 on 28 Apr 2010 after being admitted to the hospital on 19 Apr 2010. The Ministry of Health reportedly said that the patient's x-ray results while being hospitalized had shown deterioration of her condition. She died on the same day she tested positive
The other patient, a 45 year old housewife from Malang, tested positive through a routine surveillance of influenza-like illness in a community health center in the East Java city. She was admitted to the health center with influenza-like complaints. After a swab collection of a specimen from her nose and throat and an examination at the laboratory, the patient was declared positive for the virus. The patient has recovered and is now in a healthy condition, the release said.

Cambodia- Avian Influenza – 1st fatality

A 27 year old man in eastern Cambodia has died of bird flu [avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection], the country's 1st fatality this year [2010] and its 8th since the virus started to sweep through Asia almost 7 years ago.
Cambodia's Health Ministry said in a statement issued jointly on Wed 21 Apr2010 with the World Health Organization that the man in Prey Veng province had died on Sat 17 Apr 2010. It was the country's 10th human case of the disease.
The Cambodian man's death was reportedly the 11th worldwide this year [2010].
The Health Ministry said it was investigating the case, and stepping up a campaign for preventative health measures.

The Ministry of Health of Cambodia reportedly announced a new confirmed case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The 27-year-old male, from Prey Veng province, developed symptoms on 13 Apr 2010, was admitted to the hospital on 16 Apr 2010 and died the following day. The patient prepared and consumed sick poultry 7 days before onset of symptoms.

A 4 year old girl from Lubuk Basung, Kabupaten Agam, West Sumatera has been treated for suspected bird flu (avian influenza A (H5N1) virus infection) at a hospital in Padang, West Sumatera [Sumatra].
The father reportedly said his daughter developed fever 3 days earlier, and then was brought to the public health center. Her temperature fell after taking medicine, but then returned the next day. Later she was rushed to the regional hospital in Lubuk Basung. The hospital then referred the patient to the hospital in Padang.
The patient was reported to have contact history with a dead chicken close to her house. The dead chicken has tested positive for avian influenza A (H5N1) virus infection by a rapid test.



Vietnam- Another A/H5N1 infection case reported in Bac Kan

Bac Kan province has confirmed the 2nd A/H5N1-infection case in Na Tao hamlet, Nhu Co commune, Cho Moi district. The [female, 27-year-old patient] visited a bird flu-infected area 4 or 5 days before being diagnosed with the deadly virus.
The health care centre in Cho Moi district has reported 9 suspected cases, 8 of them from Na Tao hamlet.

At present, local authorities and health agencies are intensifying emergency measures to sterilise infected areas and strictly monitor new outbreaks of the disease. Cho Moi district has been given 700 doses of Tamiflu vaccine and enough medical equipment to ensure that necessary checkups and treatment can be provided to local patients.

Vietnam records second bird flu death this year

Viet Nam records its 2nd bird flu death this year [2010]. A 3-year-old girl on Wednesday [17 Mar 2010] became the 2nd person to die of bird flu this year [2010] in Viet Nam, a doctor said. The child succumbed after about a week in a Ho Chi Minh City pediatric hospital with a severe lung infection, an official was quoted as saying. The girl, from southern Binh Duong province, was Viet Nam's 59th human fatality from bird flu, also known as H5N1.
A 38-year-old woman in southern Tien Giang province died from the virus in late February [2010].
Viet Nam has the world's 2nd-highest bird flu death toll after Indonesia, according to the World Health Organization.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health announced a suspected case of bird flu virus on 16 March [2010]. The patient, a 3-year-old child from Thuan An district, Binh Duong province, was hospitalised with symptoms of petechial fever, but she then tested positive for the A/H5N1 virus and is now under quarantine for treatment at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam- Ha Noi woman tests positive for bird flu

A 25-year-old woman from Soc Son District, Ha Noi, tested positive for avian influenza virus type H5N1 or bird flu on Thursday [11 Mar 2010], according to the Preventive Medicine and Environment [Department] at the Ministry of Health.
The patient, who is now in intensive care in a hospital, caught the virus on 5 Mar 2010, allegedly from ill and dead poultry that were near her home.

Vietnam- Bird flu outbreak strikes Khanh Hoa

A fresh outbreak of avian flu (A/H5N1) has been reported in central Khanh Hoa Province, killing nearly 10,000 birds.
Affected areas have been decontaminated and poultry incinerated, said a spokesperson from the provincial Animal Health Unit.
The latest outbreak has brought the number of provinces affected by the flu to 6: Dien Bien, Nam Dinh, Nghe An, Khanh Hoa, Soc Trang and Ca Mau, said Hoang Van Nam from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The bird flu epidemic has continued to spread in these provinces, killing thousands of poultry since it re-emerged last December [2009] despite efforts to prevent contagion.
The ministry urged the provinces to increase efforts to combat and prevent the spread of the flu, and ensure more monitoring of transportation and poultry slaughterhouses, he added.
Over the last 2 weeks, 3 people from the provinces of Tuyen Quang in the north, Tien Giang in the south, and Khanh Hoa in the central were diagnosed with A/H5N1. One of the infected, a 38-year-old woman from Tien Giang Province, died from the flu.

The Ministry of Health has reported 3 new confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus, including one fatality.
The 1st case is a 3 year-old female residing in Ninh Hoa District, Khanh Hoa Province. She is recovering well.
The 2nd case was a 38 year-old female residing in Cai Be District, Tien Giang Province. The patient was admitted to the hospital in Dong Thap Province on
[21 Feb 2010] where she died on [23 Feb 2010].
The 3rd case is a 17 year-old female residing in Son Duong District, Tuyen Quang Province. She developed symptoms on [19 Feb 2010] and was taken to the hospital on [24 Feb 2010] where she is currently being treated for mild breathing difficulties.

Vietnam- Tuyen Quang confirms one A H5N1 case

A 17-year old patient in Tan Trao commune, Son Duong district, Tuyen Quang province was confirmed to have been infected with A (H5N1) virus, the Ministry of Health reportedly announced.
She was diagnosed with the disease on [19 Feb 2010] with symptoms of high fever, coughing, and sore throat. She tested positive with A (H5N1) flu virus on [27 Feb 2010], following the results of the National Institute for Hygiene and Epidemiology.
10 days previously, in the patient's house, chickens were sick and died without a clear reason, she was confirmed to have joined in destroying those chickens.
Since the beginning of this year [2010], Viet Nam has had 3 patients who tested positive with A (H5N1) flu virus, one died.

A 38 year old woman has become the 1st victim [fatal case] of bird flu in Viet Nam in 2010, bringing the country's toll from avian influenza to 58, the health ministry was quoted as saying on Friday [26 Feb 2010]. The woman died on Tuesday [23 Feb 2010] in the southern province of Tien Giang after 2 days of unsuccessful hospital treatment, said the Ministry in an online statement.
The victim had killed and cooked sick waterfowl, the statement added. Viet Nam's last death from the H5N1 virus was in December [2009]. At present, outbreaks of bird flu among poultry have been reported in 5 provinces. Viet Nam ranks 2nd after Indonesia for the highest bird flu death toll, according to the World Health Organization.

A 3 year old girl in the central province of Khanh Hoa has tested positive for [avian influenza] H5N1 [virus infection], becoming the country's 1s bird flu patient this year [2010], the Ministry of Health reported in Hanoi on Monday [22 Feb 2010].
The girl, who lives in Ninh Hoa District's Ninh Than Commune, fell sick with fever, sore throat, cough, and a runny nose on 27 Jan 2010. She was admitted to Ninh Hoa Hospital the next day and was confirmed to be infected with the virus on 12 Feb 2010, according to the Ministry. The girl was recovering, the Ministry reported.

A hospital in Bandarlampung, Lampung has again quarantined a patient suspected of being infected [with avian influenza] after showing symptoms of high fever, coughing and difficulties of breathing. The patient was reported to have had direct contact with her chickens that had suddenly died. She burned the dead chickens and buried them near her house a few days ago. Her husband said thousands of chickens near his home had abruptly died in the past 2 weeks.

Two [suspected] bird flu victims have tested positive [for avian influenza (H5N1) virus infection].
A resident of Bekasi, West Java province, a 25-year-old, tested positive for bird flu H5N1 infection. This victim had died on 25 Jan 2010. Laboratory tests were positive for H5N1 virus infection, said Tritarayati, the Head of the Public Communication Center of the
Ministry of Health. The victim was possibly infected from direct contact with birds.
Another victim, a 3-year-old child, a resident of Jakarta, was reported to show mild influenza-like illness signs.

Papua New Guinea's cholera outbreak has spread to 2000 people, a World Health Organization official reportedly said on 8 Feb 2010. The official warned that poor water sanitation was making the disease hard to contain. The country's 1st cholera outbreak in 50 years emerged in northern Morobe province last July [2009] and within months had spread along the north coast to Madang and East Sepik.

Cambodian authorities began a mass killing of ducks Wednesday after confirming a fresh outbreak of the deadly bird flu virus.
The cull comes after more than 15,000 ducks died last week in the southern province of Takeo and samples tested positive Tuesday for the H5N1 virus, commonly known as bird flu, said Kao Phal, an official of the Agriculture Ministry.
He said the sale of duck meat and its transport from the affected villages will be banned.
So far there have been no signs of human infection from the ducks, the official said.
At least seven Cambodians have died from the disease since the first reported outbreak in 2004.

A medical team at a public hospital in Pekanbaru,
Riau, has succeeded in saving the life of a 4-year-old child from bird
flu [avian influenza (H5N1) virus infection]. Now the hospital is
currently struggling to save another H5N1 suspect, a 17-year-old boy,
from the life-threatening condition.

The team coordinator reportedly said that the child was declared birdflu positive based on the results of laboratory tests by the Health
Ministry's Research and Development Agency last week.
